The computer was off and a local contact was able to start the Mac. The operating system shut down the computer due to a power failure. System settings have now been updated so the UPS shutdown feature is disabled. A graceful shutdown prevents the \\"restart automatically after a power failure\\" feature and remote power cycle from working.
